Southland Park Gaming and Racing
West Memphis, Arkansas

Mid-South’s Hot New Gaming Spot

by Jen Cuthbertson

It’s not the same Southland Greyhound Park your Granddaddy went to in the 1950’s,  your daddy went to in the 70’s , or even you went to a few months ago. Southland is a whole new gaming experience in
West Memphis, Arkansas. The State of Arkansas passed legislation allowing games of skill in 2005. North Delaware, the parent company of Southland Greyhound Park, pooled together a talented team from across the country and created a new and exciting gaming venue for the mid-south, now called Southland Park Gaming and Racing. The Forty Million dollar extreme makeover has converted a 50 year old building into a sparkling pristine entertainment center.
“We’re thrilled to formally re-introduce Southland Park Gaming & Racing to the community,” said Barry Baldwin, president of Southland Racing Corporation. “The makeover of this facility marks a milestone 50 years in the making and will usher in new state-of-the-art gaming unique to
Arkansas. We appreciate the community’s support in this historic transformation and look forward to welcoming hundreds of thousands of annual visitors with a more guest-oriented gaming and racing setting.”

Southland has achieved a remarkable certification of Silver in the Environmental Leads Program, which is a major achievement for a building built in the 1950’s.

During the remodeling process over 1.7 million tons of debris did not go to the dump but was recycled. The Heating and Air Ventilation system is the most efficient and modern state of the art air smoke filtration system available. The inside air is filtrated to the outside and never goes back into the building. Clean air is the end result. Smoking is allowed in the gaming sections but not in any of the dining venues. The extreme air filtration system eliminates irritants from smoking taking the smoke straight up and out.

Let’s Play
casino floor at Southland Greyhound Park West Memphis, ArkansasThe
New Gaming Center – On the first floor of Southland you will find the new gaming center filled with over 800 electronic games of skill including video poker, electronic Blackjack tables, and electronic poker tables.  Arkansas gaming law allows machines where the player has to make a decision. Games like Double Diamond, Sizzling 7’s, Red, White and Blue one line three reel machines have a “lock and roll” feature. First spin you can choose which symbols to keep, then you are allowed to spin again. Basically you get two spins for the price of one. Helpful friendly personnel are plentiful if you have a problem or need help. Machines use the ticket in ticket out system and are coinless. You will be amazed at the cleanliness, the layout, and the comfortable seating.

Currently Southland offers three player reward programs covering each individual gaming venue. Eventually in 2007 Southland will have a one card player reward program encompassing all phases of gaming history to one card.

Greyhound Racing Southland offers pari-mutuel wagering, which means that you aren't betting against the house, you are competing with the other patrons. Southland’s 19% takeout is the lowest anywhere, so you know that 81% of the money wagered on Southland's races goes back home with the patrons after each performance.
The spectator section is two levels, first floor and second floor. All seating is indoors.

Free theatre seating is available on both levels. Upper level also has carrels (boxes), which are by reservation only. Each carrel has a 13 inch television, table, available internet service for your laptop and seating for 4 people.

The Track is an oval dirt track. Races are about 8 minutes apart. Each race takes about 32 seconds. Eight dogs run per race. Betting starts at $2. Programs are available for $1 packed with information about the races, the dogs, stats, and helpful tips. Also brochures line the wall for beginners needing a little help. If you are new to greyhound racing or a veteran of the tracks you will find information at www.southlandgreyhound.com on the schedules, the dogs, how to, and just about anything you want to know about racing.
Southland offers 400 races a year. Sunday and Tuesday are simulcast only, no live racing.

Watching the dogs race is fun and exciting. The lag time between races gives you time to regroup, visit, or socialize. If you have never experienced Southland Greyhound Park, give it a try. You may be pleasantly surprised and have fun too!

About the Dogs – Greyhounds naturally like to run. Training starts after they are a year old and most hounds race from 2-5 years. The dogs are only allowed to race 3 times in a two week period. No dogs are harmed in racing and are well pampered and taken care of on and off the tracks. Twenty different kennels provide racing dogs for Southland each year.
If you ever wondered what the dogs are chasing around the track, it’s not a mechanical rabbit anymore, it’s a stuffed bone which emits a noise the dogs chase. Competitive chasing and hunting is in their genes.
Greyhounds are lovable and the retirees make wonderful pets. “A forty mph couch potato” is not just a saying, it’s what you get when you adopt a greyhound. Meet and Greets are available throughout the Mid-South for adoption purposes, or you can apply online.
For more information on Adopting Retired Greyhounds visit: www.midsouthgreyhound.com

Simulcast – With the help of modern technology you can wager and watch races from around the country. Take your choice of exciting greyhound racing from more than a dozen tracks such as Phoenix, Wheeling, Derby Lane/Tampa, Jacksonville, Raynham, Wonderland, Birmingham/Victoryland, Hollywood/Flagler, Lincoln, Tri-State, Tucson and many others. You can also watch and wager on topnotch horse racing from Oaklawn Jockey Club in Arkansas; Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga in New York; Churchill Downs, Ellis Park and Turfway in Kentucky; Louisiana Downs, Fair Grounds, Delta Downs and Evangeline in Louisiana; Gulfstream, Calder and Tampa Bay in Florida; Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar and Bay Meadows in California; and many, many more. Plenty of harness action is also available from such tracks as Northfield Park, Meadowlands, Maywood/Balmoral and several other tracks. Southland Park even provides an'international flair' with its simulcasts of horse racing from Australia.

Online Live Racing - It's the ultimate video game! Live greyhound racing on your own computer. Download programs two days before a scheduled race for free, use whatever handicapping software you like to make your selections, wager online with either US Offtrack or Euro Offtrack, and watch the races live via streaming video on your own computer. You can win money right in your own home! The only thing that is better is going to Southland and watching the races in person.

Let’s Party!
If you are a party of one or a party of 450 Southland has what you need. From the lively Juke Joint to the main event center or banquet room adjacent to the buffet, Southland’s hospitality crews are ready to make your visit a memorable occasion.

The Juke Joint – The Blues are alive and well at Southland’s Juke Joint. Located just off the gaming floor on the first level.
The nightclub / sports bar is filled with plasma screen televisions. The décor is
“all Arkansas”. Southern – inspired tin roofs, Arkansas rock and locally harvested wood floors create a down home feeling. Barry Baldwin, President of Southland, says, “Our people hit the roads in Arkansas seeking antique shops to find the “right” items for the Juke Joint.”

Live entertainment from the regions top talents will be found in the Juke Joint. Stop in, take a load off, relax, soak up the Southern Hospitality Southland has to offer.

Let’s Eat!
The World Market Buffet
– The aroma of chicken broasting and pork ribs barbqueing will draw you toward the new International fanfare all you can eat buffet. A wide variety of Italian, Asian and Southern home cooking are featured in the new 280 seat World Market Buffet at Southland.

Desserts you just can’t pass up. Homemade cookies, pies, bar cakes, iced cakes, frozen dairy bar, pastries and more. Now here is a good idea. The Dessert Bar has two sides one facing the gaming floor. If you just want a quick cookie or dessert you may purchase separately without going thru the buffet. There is something for everyone’s palette at Southland.

Quinn and Ellas – Located on the first floor across from the World Market Buffet is Quinn and Ella’s Deli. Featuring salads, deli sandwiches, delicious quarter pound beef hot dogs beverages, and more. Take it to go or eat in the open style seating area just off the gaming floor. Throughout Southland are other snack bars located for your convenience.

If you have never been to Southland Park Gaming and Racing, give it a whirl, put it on your list of things to do. You may even want to take Granddad or Dad with you and show them how Southland has revolved into a premiere entertainment center.
