TUNICA, Miss. – The World Poker Open returns to Tunica for the eighth consecutive year.  Gold Strike Casino Resort, a wholly owned subsidiary of MGM MIRAGE, is once again the exclusive site for the World Poker Tour.  Attended by both nationally and internationally renowned poker players, the 2007 Gold Strike World Poker Open begins Jan. 3 and culminates with the World Poker Tour’s championship event January 21-25.  

Last year’s champion, Scotty Nguyen, will return to Gold Strike to defend his 2006 title.  The crowned ‘Prince of Poker’ took home nearly $1M in the 2006 Gold Strike World Poker Open, the tournament bracelet, and most importantly, established himself as a formidable opponent on the circuit.  The 2007 World Poker Open champion will walk away with an estimated $1M in cash, a championship bracelet valued at $5000, and a much sought-after $25,000 seat in the World Poker Tour Championship set for April 2007 at Bellagio, MGM MIRAGE’s AAA Five Diamond resort in Las Vegas.

The World Poker Open will include 20 tournament events, with buy-ins starting from $500 up to $10,000 for the WPT championship finale. In addition, there will be 7 nightly         no-limit hold’em tournaments with a $200 buy-in + $30 entry fee and 15 nightly no-limit hold’em tournaments with a $500 buy-in + $50 entry fee.  The ladies of poker take the spotlight on Saturday, January 20^th in the increasingly popular Ladies No Limit Hold’em tournament with a $300 buy in + $40 entry fee. All tournaments start with double chips, including $20,000 in Championship event.

“This year’s tournament could be one for the records,” states Ken Lambert, director of Poker Operations for Gold Strike Casino Resort.  “Every day we get calls from players around the world confirming their participation.  We are excited about it not only because Gold Strike is hosting this well known event, but also because of the impact it will have on Tunica and on Mississippi making this the place to play in the South.”  According to Lambert, 400+ players are set to compete in the $10,000 championship event.   

The Travel Channel will provide full final-table coverage of the World Poker Open for broadcast during its Season V telecast of the World Poker Tour. One of the highest rated shows in the history of The Travel Channel, the WPT is now seen in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide. WORLD POKER TOUR® airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Travel Channel.
