Thunder traveled from his home state of Florida to New York City in the early 1960’s to pursue his singing career. Immediately, he was befriended by soul-singer-great Jackie Wilson, who greatly admired Thunder’s talent. Wilson quickly arranged an audition for Thunder for the role of a blues singer in the Apollo Theatre Production of the play “Blind Man Sings the Blues”. Although, Thunder did not consider himself a blues singer, he was awarded the part over two hundred other hopefuls. He joined the cast, which included Odetta and The Harry Belafonte Singers. Thunder then moved into the position of lead vocalist for The Drifters. After touring with them for months, Thunder accomplished his first international hit, “Loop De Loop”. He followed up with other big hits which include “I’m Alive”, “Everybody Do The Sloopy”, “You Send Me” and “The Rosey Dance”. Thunder has toured with well-known greats such as Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, Jerry Butler, Bobby Womack and Elvis Presley. Today, Thunder travels throughout the United States and Canada with his new group, The Lightning Showband. This four-piece band encompasses the same excitement and energy that makes the Johnny Thunder show unique. Related Links: |
