GEORGE JONES Over four decades have passed since America first heard the raw, emotional, heart-on-his-sleeve voice of George Jones. Born in Saratoga, Texas, George sang for tips on the streets and worked the local honky tonk circuit. In 1955, a record producer suggested he stop singing like the country stars of the day and start singing After that, George Jones was often found on the charts with hits including "White Lightning," "Tender Years," "Walk Through This World With Me" and "She Thinks I Still Care." His marriage to Tammy Wynette in 1969 led to the No. 1 duet "We’re Gonna Hold On." When that song proved less than prophetic, Jones hit big again after the divorce with "Golden Ring" and "Near You." Drinking kept his personal life in disarray, but publicly George was still going strong when he kicked off the 1980’s with one of the all time great country records, "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which won him Single of the Year honors from the CMA in 1980 and 1981! In 1992 Jones’ monumental career was recognized when he was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. But he proved there was more to him than even that honor when he scored a hit video with "I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair." Related Links: |
