Former Wimbledon player to oversee Tunica Tennis complex

Keith Evans, former Director of Tennis at the Ridgepointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark., has taken a similar position at the soon-to-be-opened Tunica National Golf and Tennis facility, in Tunica County.

Evans, has played the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and the French Open. He is the winner of 14 U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit tournaments and reached the fourth round in the Super 9 in Montreal, Canada. His highest singles ranking was 117 and his highest doubles ranking was 90. Evans was the SEC Champion in 1991 and was a NCAA All-American in 1990 and 1991.
Evans has big plans for the new facility, which he said will sport the only indoor clay tennis courts in the South. Since it is a public facility, many of those plans are centered around teaching local residents to play tennis. “We’ll have adult clinics and team tennis,” said Evans. “We’ll also be involved with the area high schools coming out once a week and we’ll be teaching them the right way to play.”

Evans said he also plans monthly mixers as part of a community outreach program. “Once a month, we’ll just call people and try to get them to come out. It’ll be a night of fun, tennis lessons, and refreshments,” he said.

The four indoor clay courts will be located in the 50,000 square-foot clubhouse, which will serve the golf and tennis complex. “Having them indoors will allow for year-round play,” said Tunica County Director of Special Projects Charlie Williams. The clubhouse will also include pro-shops and a restaurant. During the second phase of construction, six outdoor courts will be built to increase opportunities for play.

The $12 million Tunica National Golf and Tennis Complex is now under construction in Robisonville. “This entire development is owned by Tunica County and is designed to give our residents and visitors an absolutely top-notch golf course and tennis courts,” said  Williams. “The fees will be low enough so anyone can play and we’re absolutely committed to teaching golf and tennis to anyone who wants to learn.”

The Tunica National Golf and Tennis Complex is part of an ongoing effort to make Tunica County, already the third largest gaming destination in the country, one of the prime, overall tourist destinations in the United States.
