The Tunica Airport expansion is a $38 million project. The next phase of the expansion is scheduled to open with a 5,500-foot runway and a 9,000-square-foot terminal building in the spring of 2003. This phase will primarily serve charter and corporate aircraft, including regional jets and turboprops. When the full project is completed in early 2005, the airport will have a 7,000-foot runway and a 45,000-square-foot commercial terminal building, and will serve larger aircraft, including airlines. The airport is located on Beatline Road southeast of the town of Tunica.
The Tunica River Park, where construction has already begun on the $23 million state-of-the-art project, will feature a 37,000-square-foot interpretive center with a 48-foot outdoor observation platform, harbor, marina, aquarium, walking trails and a 400-passenger stern-wheeler, the “Tunica Queen,” which will offer excursions on the river. The River Park is located adjacent to Fitzgerald’s Casino.
The park will enable visitors to experience the Mississippi River in a world-class facility. Walking trails designed for minimum impact on the environment will allow people to observe the Mississippi Delta’s ecosystems. Exhibits will focus on the relationship between the Delta and its wildlife, as well as the levee system that is designed for flood control.
Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club
The Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club, a $12 million project, is scheduled for completion by autumn of 2003 and will be open to the public. The tournament-level, 18-hole championship golf course is designed to be playable for all skill levels, and will also be used as a premier facility for amateur and professional events. The tennis facility will feature four indoor clay courts and six outdoor courts. An 8,000-square-foot clubhouse is also part of the project.
Mark McCumber and Associates of Jacksonville, Fla., one of the world’s leading golf course designers, is the architect. Among the firm’s other projects are the Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., Osprey Cove in St. Mary’s, Ga., and Scales Creek Country Club in Atlanta. The 212-acre golf course will feature dramatic and unique landscaping with a variety of grasses and tree groupings. Construction will require the moving of one million cubic yards of dirt. Tunica National is located in the casino resort area, between Casino Center and Casino Strip, and bounded by U.S. Highway 61 North and Old Highway 61.
Tunica Arena & Exposition Center
The Tunica Arena & Exposition Center’s $4 million expansion project will be completed the first week in October. The $25 million Arena opened in August 2000. The expansion features a new covered arena of 230 feet by 400 feet, with seating for up to 500, and 240 additional livestock stalls. With these additions, the Arena now has a total of 606 livestock stalls, the new covered arena, an indoor arena with 48,000 square feet of climate-controlled exhibition space, permanent seating for 2,200, an outdoor arena, and an adjacent pavilion with an additional 150,000 square feet of exposition area. There is also extensive parking and 57 RV spaces. The expansion allows the Arena to serve larger regional and national events. The Arena is located at 3872 U.S. Highway 61 North.
