Grand Casino Resort is cooking up something big this holiday season something really big. A colossal gingerbread village is now on display in the casinos main entrance until December 29. This lofty ceiling-scraper includes an enormous golden castle with six-foot towers, an amusement park with a Ferris wheel, a hospital, train track, its own water tower and yes, even a casino. From the giant castle to the half-inch-tall villagers every edible item is displayed in meticulous detail. The architect behind the gingerbread village is Grand Casino Resort Executive Pastry Chef Juan Urcia. His exciting gingerbread creations have been featured on Live @ 9 and will soon be shown on Good Morning Memphis. Visitors all over the Mid-South and beyond pay a special visit just to marvel at the amazing display. Our gingerbread village is a labor of love, said Chef Juan. To do it right, we start building in June, spending about four hours on it each and every day until the moment we put it all together on the casino floor. Since construction began six months ago, Urcia and his pastry team have put in more than 750 hours using more than 1,800 pounds of sugar, 60 pounds of flour, 4 pounds of gelatin, 250 pounds of candy and 3,500 lights. Mixed together, the ingredients generated over 80 pounds of gingerbread dough. The castle walls are 2.5 thick and consist of powered sugar, gelatin and cornstarch. The castle took two months to dry before it could be decorated. |
